HUGO Papermod theme didn&#39;t have one so

I am back on Bluesky after a break and decided to add a link to my profile on the front page. I noticed that there wasn’t an SVG image in the theme so I added it, here’s how:

First locate the theme’s svg.html located here:

themes/PaperMod/layouts/partials/svg.html

Open the file in a text editor, make a copy first of course.

Then add the following block of code into the file, you will see the format and just copy the ones that are in there.

 	{{- else if (eq $icon_name "bluesky") -}}

Paring down my website to the bone

After many years of posting and maintaining a small but active little website blog on this domain, I decided in the night I’d had enough and didn’t see the point of having all my old data online and available to scrappers and other online thievery.

So today I removed all my old posts bar one and deleted the Books and Notes sections completely not sure why I did it in the first place other than it seemed like a good idea at the time.

From now on I will be pruning heavily each year and keeping the stuff on here to the minimum. I have Obsidian for local notes so don’t need an online source anymore.

Next step is to sort out my studio site as I originally had that linked to images on Artstation and they are long gone so all that’s left are a bunch of larger thumbnails, not sure what I will do with that yet…

I have a few prints hanging but...

I did a few prints of some of my models a couple of years ago, unfortunately I rendered them too dark for hanging on the wall. While they looked okay on the screen they weren’t so good in a normally lit room, and the back ground was far to dark for the subject to stand out.
So I have done a little reworking and relighting to lift them from the page as it were.

The fun part for me is a few, like this one, were done in Modo and I haven’t used that in a while so remembering the settings and shortcuts was a mental refresher. Luckily Modo still runs for me, version 17.1 was a last and free upgrade from Foundry, now gone sadly. I really liked Modo, but all good things come to an end.

This is one of a Droid model I made some years back and I like it but the render I did back then was really dark and didn’t work well as a print, now I think it might.

Here’s a little preview of the model in question:

Unable to locate machine on network

After setting up my new network I found I couldn’t connect to my MacBook using its hostname, which is a pain for local web work in HUGO. I found that the problem lay in Apple’s security assigning fake MAC addresses to machines to limit tracking in Public Wi-Fi Hotspots.

While this maybe useful in someone cafe or other public areas it is a real pain on home, school and work networks, because the router doesn’t know where your machine is. So you can’t access the machine via its name.

The solution is simple:

Turn off Private W-Fi address in System settings > Wi-Fi > Details

A privacy warning will show to worry people needlessly so ignore it.

Should you want it on in the cafe, just reverse the steps.

Using PaperMod Theme

After trying various tips and tricks, I found a solution.

There were a lot of older posts claiming you could turn off the RSS in sections frontmater and on in some other. This I found out to be a fallacy, all I managed was to turn it off totally or on totally.

The solution does not lay in the frontmater, at least not for me, it lies in the rss.xml file in the themes directory.

The full path to the file will be:
<webroot>/themes/PaperMod/layouts/_default/rss.xml

This is of course for the PaperMod theme so your mileage may vary depending on your theme.

Once inside the file the line you are looking for is
{{- range $pages }}
on mine it was line 67 in the file.

Here is the surrounding code block:

    {{- with .OutputFormats.Get "RSS" }}
    {{ printf "<atom:link href=%q rel=\"self\" type=%q />" .Permalink .MediaType | safeHTML }}
    {{- end }}
    {{- range $pages }}
    {{- if and (ne .Layout `search`) (ne .Layout `archives`) }}

Once you have the line located you need to edit it to read as follows, (backup now):

{{ range where (where .Site.Pages ".Section" "post") "Kind" "page" }}

The .Section on mine was post, I have seen others use blog. It all depends on your setup, be prepared for a little trial and error, and remember that backup.

The net result of this is that only the post type of entry will end up in the RSS feed. The nice thing with HUGO is that you can check all this before deploying you blog updates. Vivaldi has a nice built in RSS reader that makes this very easy, just a tip, not a sales pitch.

Now remember the backup and don’t come crying to me if it all goes pear shaped. Your terminal will show you if there is an error, syntax or otherwise, so keep it in view.

I want to play more later and see about adding extra code to have an RSS for other parts of this blog, but that is for another day.
